Pheasant feeding discouraged despite snowy winter

Animal-loving Minnesotans who leave corn for hungry pheasants at this time of year could be doing more harm than good, say wildlife experts with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. DNR wildlife managers have seen corn spread along roadsides, likely to help ringneck pheasants survive a difficult Minnesota winter.

Public comment sought for county’s hazard mitigation plan

Yellow Medicine County has completed an updated draft of the of its Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP) and is now seeking public feedback. Like all Minnesota counties, Yellow Medicine County is vulnerable to a variety of potential natural disasters, such as tornadoes, windstorms, severe winter storms, flooding, drought, and extreme temperatures, which threaten the loss of life and property in the county. Planning for natural disasters minimizes the impact of these events that can cause vast economic loss and personal hardship.

Try making changes to your daily routine so that you’re maximizing the amount of daylight in your schedule. Other ideas include walking outside when the sun is out, leaving the curtains open, or rearranging your rooms so that more light can get in.

Minnesota Veterans Homes receive $80,000 donation from Hutchinson VFW

The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) was honored to receive a very generous donation of $80,000 from the Department of Minnesota Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Charles McLaughlin Post 906 in Hutchinson, MN. This donation was specifically directed to each individual State Veterans Home, which will receive $10,000 per location.

HILA MAE ZIETLOW

Hila Mae Zietlow passed away on Monday, February 6, 2023, after a long illness. She was born in Montevideo on December 10, 1942, to Louis and Helen (Raddohl) Erickson. She resided in Tyro Township with her parents and graduated from Montevideo High School in 1960. Hila met Ordell Zietlow and the two were married in 1961 at Zion Lutheran Church. She worked for Swifts in Montevideo, the Boyd Post Office for 10 years, the Porter Post Office for 17 years, and most recently at Walmart in Montevideo for 12 years until her retirement. Hila enjoyed playing cards with her many friends and loved to decorate for Christmas inside and outside of the house. She always had many goodies to serve to her family and friends. Hila was president of the Ladies’ Auxiliary League and sold poppies for 20 years for the Auxiliary. She was president of the Boyd Senior Center where she would often bring her homemade baked goods for lunch. Hila is preceded in death by her son, DelRoy Zietlow; parents, Louis and Helen (Raddohl) Erickson; grandparents, Charlie and Ida (Zempel) Raddohl; and eight sisters and brothers-in-law. Hila is survived by her husband, Ordell Zietlow of Boyd; brothers, Luther (Mary) and Lynn (Elaine) Erickson of Montevideo; brother-in-law, Howard (Sharon) Zietlow; a number of nieces and nephews, and many friends. Visitation will be on Friday, February 17, from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service beginning at 6:30 p.m. at J.H. Lynner Funeral Home in Clarkfield. Funeral will be held on Saturday, February 18 at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Tyro Township with visitation one hour prior at the church. Interment to follow in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Boyd. MELBURNE BURDETTE FJERKENSTAD

Melburne Burdette Fjerkenstad was born on November 3, 1927, on the family farm near Boyd, the youngest boy of John and Olga (Grefsrud) Fjerkenstad. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Boyd, and he attended school in the Boyd area while also working on his family’s farm before enlisting in the Air Force in 1945.

LLOYD ESCHEN

Lloyd Eschen, 87, originally of Boyd died on Monday, February 6, 2023, at the Johnson Memorial Health Services Care Center in Dawson. A private family graveside service will be held later this spring.
