Often when I’m writing and need to concentrate, I’ll put my earbuds in and go to my Prime Music account and search for “Canon in D” and then start playing all the different versions of this song. There are many, many recordings of this song, all with different interpretations of the same music that was written by the German Baroque composer Johann Pachelbel in the late- 1600s.

Local author releases new book
Patricia Lubeck is a local author who has just released her new book, Asylum Scandals. This book is about two of Minnesota’s two oldest state hospitals. One in St. Pete (that opened in 1866) and one in Rochester (that opened in 1879). Her latest book tells the harrowing tales of patients who were locked away in the asylums.

Trout anglers can find winter fishing opportunities in Minnesota

UMN Extension offers training to support farm families
The University of Minnesota Extension is offering training for those that work with or know farm families experiencing stress, loss or tough decisions for their family or business. Ambiguous loss and farming facilitator training will be offered at 5 locations across the state of Minnesota during January.

Winter is here and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has tips for anyone who wants to try ice fishing. The DNR’s learn to ice fish page (mndnr. gov/GoFishing/Learn-Ice-Fish.html) has information about how to search for fishing lakes online with DNR LakeFinder, how to dress, thrifty ways to get fishing equipment, and how to catch fish through the ice.

Microenterprise Loan Program receives recognition in ‘Overcoming Adversity’
HUTCHINSON, Minn.—Southwest Initiative Foundation’s (SWIF) Microenterprise Loan Program, in partnership with the redstar marketing un/academy, recently received recognition for their work helping small businesses in rural Minnesota overcome adversity. In November, The Mid-America Economic Development Council presented its annual Economic Development awards at the 2021 Mid-America Competitiveness Conference in Chicago. This awards competition recognizes and stimulates the creative use of quality marketing and programs by economic development organizations throughout the council’s 13-state region.
DNR warns that slush weighs down ice
Last week’s snowstorm that dropped heavy, wet snow across much of the state has significantly affected ice conditions, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Slush adds weight to the ice and its effects can be unpredictable.
