Hearts, Hooves and Heroes event held at Lee-Mar Equine Center

The annual Hearts, Hooves, and Heroes event was held at Lee-Mar Equine Center and Ranch on Friday, September 29th in order to honor all of the organization’s hardworking and dedicated volunteers. The event started with a cookout, followed by a short awards ceremony where there was a myriad of folks receiving recognition for all they do at the ranch, with others, and of course with the horses. The dinner reception and awards ceremony was held at the indoor arena at the ranch where it ended around 7 p.m.

SMSU invites students to apply for free during Minnesota State Month

Students interested in continuing their education with Southwest Minnesota State University can apply for free during Minnesota State Month. In an effort to make college more accessible, the standard processing fee is waived for applications submitted anytime during the month of October. October is a great time for students to take advantage of the admission events scheduled at SMSU: - Join us for one of our Mustang Days visit programs on October 20-21. - Plan a Mustang Saturday visit on October 22.

Autumn Experience Series: Apple harvest opportunities

No matter what part of the state you’re in, apples are available in a multitude of places in Minnesota. There are also a number of apple varieties that were cultivated right here. In fact, twenty-eight apple varieties have been cultivated in Minnesota since the University of Minnesota began its apple breeding program in 1878. According to the University of Minnesota, the following is a list of apples available this season: -Beacon: bright red, with slightly tart flavor, introduced in 1936 - ripens mid-late August.

YME Trap team participates in second conference competition

On Sunday, October 2nd the Yellow Medicine East Trap team participated in the second conference competition. Logan Hoff shot a perfect score. He is the first to shoot a perfect score of 25/25 on the new fields built just for the Trap team with a grant. “He was trying so hard for 50/50 but didn’t quite make it. His total score for the day was 46/50 - very impressive,” says YME Trap coach Sandra Berthelsen. Ryan Brouwer also shot a perfect score of 25/25. Pictured are the perfect score shooter’s of the day with their state league patch given for that perfect score. “Congratulations on some really great shooting Logan and Ryan - you make us coaches hold our breath on those last shots as we score and watch this very exciting experience,” says Berthelsen. Fans can catch videos and pics of the Yellow Medicine East Trap Team on their Facebook page. The next shoot is Sunday, October 9th at 1:30.

YME hosts invitational

Yellow Medicine East Cross Country teams hosted an invitational at the Granite Run Golf Course last week. Leaders for YME included Dylan Castillo who placed 55th for the boys with a final time of 21:22; Connor Olson finishing 83rd with a time of 22:41; and Xavier Mikel finishing 93rd with a time of 24:35.
