Staff changes in Granite Falls Police Department

At last week’s regular meeting of the Granite Falls City Council, the council received a monthly report from Granite Falls Police Chief Brian Struffert. In the report, Chief Struffert noted that there has been some progress made in filling open positions, with the Assistant Chief position being recently offered to Dan Lewis.

Advocate Tribune office opens in Granite Falls

The Advocate Tribune office opens in Granite Falls on August 1st, after two years of the community having no office. One of the goals of Jeremy Gulban, owner of CherryRoad Media upon purchasing the newspaper in January, was to re-open the offices that had been previously closed. The new office is located in the Lavin Family Chiropractic building on Highway 212, to the back of the building. The office will be open Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for visitors to drop off news content, and advertising info, pick up a newspaper or subscribe. Photo by Jessica Stölen-Jacobson

“Vanity of vanities, says the Teacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity.” (Ecclesiastes 1:2)

I’m writing this from a very remote cabin in the middle of Kentucky. We drove for miles -to find this Airbnb where we are staying for the night. The directions weren’t easy to follow and the reception for the GPS kept fading in and out. Finally, we made it to this beautiful cabin, deep in the quiet woods of Kentucky. We were greeted by a doe and her fawn, later we had a bullfrog chorus from a nearby pond with the cicadas as backup singers. Tomorrow, we’ll continue on through the Daniel Boone National Forest to the Cumberland Falls State Resort and Park, and next on to see our kids visiting in Dandridge, Tennessee near the Great Smoky Mountains. It is so easy to feel the awesomeness and power of God in all this beautiful creation. But when we get home and back to the normal daily lives, it seems harder to find God in that daily routine. It’s the normal daily routine that makes me think of Ecclesiastes.

Live Well, Age Wisely: Becoming a Dementia Friend

The last week in July is the Minnesota Community Action Partnership’s state conference. This year it’s a short drive down the road to Willmar and I’m looking forward to networking with colleagues from around the state, learning from different speakers, and just the change of pace. I’ve been preparing to co-present two sessions, one of which is Developing a Dementia-Friendly Workplace. It is based on the Dementia Friends information session and the purpose is to create communities where people with dementia are understood and supported.

Notes from the Granite Area Arts Council

I took last week off to head to Iowa City and finish novel edits / write syllabi, known in the business as a “nerd vacation.” What did I miss, Granite Falls? From the sound of it, a lot! For one, on Thursday, I texted Dani a picture of a pedestrian mall (it had painted crosswalks, her favorite). She responded with appreciation, and then, “What the heck.
