Caterpillars to butterflies . . .

2022 Seniors . . . Well, here you are about to graduate. I’m sure you’re pinching yourself at the prospect of reaching your goal of the last 12 years. I think of you all as caterpillars. You’re about to leave your cocoons; your high school and homes, to emerge as butterflies and fly away to your futures.

The recently concluded legislative session left a number of important issues unresolved, many of which are important to cities and our residents here in Southwestern Minnesota. Specifically, the agreed-upon final versions of the Tax bill and the Jobs and Energy bill are much-needed items that will offer opportunities and to our residents and our communities.

YME celebrates Minnesota Honor Society Inductees

Last Wednesday, nine students were inducted into the Yellow Medicine East Chapter of the Minnesota Honor Society. Honor Society is open to all Juniors and Seniors who meet the following guidelines: Students qualify in terms of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Students must have a cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.7 or above and receive a high character ranking from the staff of Yellow Medicine East. The character ranking is based on a student’s demonstration of respect, honesty, responsibility, courtesy, and kindness. Students must also document twenty-five volunteer service experiences and participation in school activities. This year’s YME inductees are: Drew Almich , Hailie Bjorndal , Cody Dahlager, Connor Fagen, Lauren Fagen, Andrew Flaten, Moises Hidalgo , Nicole Rillo, Riley Streich.

Traditional Dakota foods project a big success at Yellow Medicine East School

A project that introduced cultural Dakota foods into the school lunch menu this school year at Yellow Medicine East School District in Granite Falls was highly successful and will continue, said project organizers. The project, which was the result of a partnership between Countryside Public Health Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP), the Yellow Medicine East School District (YME) and the Upper Sioux Community SHIP, introduced a variety of cultural foods into the school cafeteria including wild rice (psin), raspberries (takanheca) and black berries (takanheca tanka), squash (wamnu) and beans (omnica). The taste testing sessions included information highlighting the traditional connection between the Dakota and the foods.

8,000 year old Native American remains discovered

An 8,000 year old Native American skull discovered in the Minnesota River and a subsequent social media post by the Renville County Sheriff’s Office made national news this past week. On Wednesday morning May 18, the Renville County Sheriff’s Office made a post on Facebook detailing the results of a forensic study regarding what had been suspected human skeletal remains found along by two anonymous kayakers in September of 2021.
