Mankato based band to entertain at Firemen’s Dance Afterparty

This year’s Granite Falls Firemen’s Dance will be held on Saturday, February 4th. Headlining the event held at Prairie’s Edge Casino and Resort will be country western singer Dylan Scott, followed by the band IV Play hosting the after- party that begins at 10 p.m. The after party is for those over the age of 18, and is free of charge in the Casino’s Convention Center.

Montevideo’s Alyssa Nelson to perform at SquidFest

Alyssa Nelson,on her ukulele, will be performing at this year’s Squid Fest in Granite Falls on Saturday, September 17th. Nelson was born in Willmar, but mainly grew up in Montevideo. Nelson grew up with her father giving guitar lessons to students at their home. Her passion for music struck when she was 10 years old and asked for a ukulele for Christmas. She says, “Soon after [learning to play the ukulele], I took first place in the county fair talent show. After this, businesses all over Montevideo were asking for me to perform at their place of business.”

Annual Horse Power event held over the weekend

The Chippewa County Historical Society hosted their annual Horse Power Event at Swensson Farm this past Saturday. There were many examples of how life was on the homestead in the early 1900s. There was also a pumpkin patch and kid’s activities. Dan Hanen, of Montevideo who was in attendance, said, “Watching the horse-drawn potato digger was my personal favorite to watch at the event.” There were also many people enjoying tours of the house as well as touring the famous red barn on the property.

Dred I Dread to take the stage at this weekend’s SquidFest 2022

One of the bands performing for the September 17th 2nd annual SquidFest celebration in Granite Falls is Dred I Dread, bringing a mix of Reggae, Hip-Hop, Dancehall, and a little Ska to the day. Dred I Dread was started by band members Rawle G and Peewee Dread officially in 1998. Band member Serdar says, “We flew out of the gates winning best of Reggae in 1999 in the recently deceased City Pages [Magazine], and two consecutive Minnesota music awards. We were the 2001 runner-up in the Hip-Hop division in the John Lennon songwriting contest and earned a double Grammy nomination in 2016.”

Third annual Prairie Fyre festival held on rural Wood Lake farm

Tucked away off of a highway in rural Wood Lake a micro art festival (meaning a very small festival) was held over the weekend; Prairie Fyre 2022 started at 3 pm on Saturday, September 3rd and ended on Monday, September 5th at 6 am. The art festival brought a myriad of artists from far and wide with talents that run the gamut; there was live music, spoken word poetry, live DJs spinning live techno music, drag, burlesque, and many others.

RockFest brings three musicians to outdoor stage

Rockfest 2022 was held outdoors at The Rock Dining & Events on Saturday, August 27th. There were three live music acts, Kayla Daniels, Drink 182, and FlashMob, along with a couple of performers who demonstrated stunts involving fire between bands Drink 182 and Flash Mob. The Granite Falls Fire Department was also in attendance to host a BBQ feed featuring sandwiches, macaroni salad, and chips. The annual event is held outdoors, and features a variety of different musicians each year.
