Healthy Tip of the Week: Stop eating when you are full. Ok, this tip probably seems pretty obvious, but during the holiday season it seems most people eat until they are stuffed to the brim.
Editor’s Note: Each week in November through December, the newspaper will be featuring area businesses to support shopping local this holiday season, as well as some creative gift-giving ideas that support local organizations and businesses.
There was a Maker’s Day event at the Kilowatt Community Center on Wednesday, November 16th for the public to come and go at their leisure helping current artist in residence, Leah Cook, decorate Wonder Boxes. These boxes/sculptures that Cook has been working very closely on with the Yellow Medicine East high school ag welding class, will be placed at locations still to be determined around the community.
On the quest to raising good humans, I realize that most people tend to use the holidays as a teachable time for kids. We encourage the need to do good for others who might have less than we do as we donate food, toys, money and help in our communities and beyond. We do this on overdrive in November and December because these months are within the “season of giving.” And while I wish this was more of a yearround notion; I still jump on board with my own three kids to embrace the season as a time to do for others with no expectation of gain. Many of the best ways to help others costs nothing at all, aside from some time and effort.
Jon Dell brought his live folk music to Bluenose Gopher Public House on the evening of November 16th. Dell performed original music and shared many musings and the stories behind his songs. There were happy songs as well as somber songs about subjects such as losing a family member or a friend to death. Dell shared a story about a van that broke down on him five different occasions during a three month tour. He also shared a story about returning from a tour only to have the fire marshal show up at his apartment to turn off the electricity thanks to a landlord who hadn’t paid the bill. It was also the middle of winter in Harlem, NY. Dell says he was happy to play Bluenose for his first time and plans on returning again.
