If you’re reading this on Friday, September 30th from anywhere between 6 and 10pm, please put down the newspaper and make tracks for downtown Granite Falls, where the Light Up the River Meander kickoff event is undoubtedly in full swing. What you can expect: acoustic musicians, at least three small bonfires, businesses open later than usual (and with jazzily lit-up windows, to boot), a riverside family-friendly happy hour from 6 to 8pm, and community artist-in-residence Leah Cook making a temporary “tapestry” out of wild-gathered natural materials from along our river (some of which are pictured above) with anyone who wants to join in. If it’s after 8 and before 10, you might want to venture over to Bluenose for the Get Lit! afterparty, where DJ Ndpth is spinning and conversation is more than likely sparkling. Thanks to the EDA for helping make the Light Up the River event possible! If you happen to be reading this column on Saturday instead, you didn’t miss your shot at Meandering: studios and galleries around the valley will be open from 9am-6pm and again on Sunday from 9am-4pm. There are many paper copies of the brochure around town (I’ve seen stacks by the register at most businesses); you can also pick up a digital version at artsmeander. com.
The first noticeable thing when walking into the Holmberg Orchard is all the detail of the homemade signs placed frequently throughout the property. Little ones may head straight for the barrel train or perhaps they’ll run straight for the pumpkin patch or the corn maze that is much trickier to make it through than one would think (try counting all of the silly scarecrows that are sprinkled throughout the maze). There are several outdoor games for kiddos to play, several photo opportunities are set up throughout the property, and there is the onsite store that sells food, home goods, clothing, and a variety of boutique items. Rosie Petty, half of the couple that now owns and operates the orchard, said, “Seeing the families in the fall, just having fun and the kids just enjoying being outside. We try to make it very family friendly, very family orientated and things for everyone to enjoy.”
Her name was Rosie. She was a stubborn Shetland pony.
OF THE WEEK Note from Myrna: This sounds strange, but really is a good cake. Like angel food cake.
September is Emergency Preparedness month. While many of the emergencies in our area are likely to be weather related, there are countless possible disasters that could happen at any time.
My condolences to the family of Daryl Hermanson. Kevin & Stacy Schwartz had an all expensive paid trip to Tampa Bay, FL because Kevin was inducted into the Truck Driving Hall of Fame.

OF THE WEEK Note from Myrna: This recipe comes from a collection of recipes from World War II. Sugar was rationed, and every family got tokens they needed to use to purchase sugar.
