Growing up on a farm in southwestern Minnesota gave me a perspective that I had taken for granted until one of my recent seminary classes titled “Bible and Ecology.” For this class we were assigned many readings and we spent two nights and three days out on the southern Minnesota prairie, staying at Shalom Hill Farm near Windom, Minnesota. While there, we visited the Cottonwood Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) office and learned about the importance of the watershed in the area, as well as some of the optional practices that are eligible for local farmers through the MN CREP (Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program).
