Customers encouraged to monitor natural gas meter and furnace vent

With the snow fall totals inching toward winter season records across Great Plains Natural Gas’ service territories, the company is encouraging customers to inspect their natural gas meter and furnace vent areas to make sure there is not a buildup of snow and ice. Customers are encouraged to clear the snow and ice away from the meter set and the furnace vent area.

Local Foods Forum to address opportunities for farmers & eaters March 23

Farmers and eaters in the Upper Minnesota River Valley will have an opportunity to come to together and learn about the opportunities involved in growing the local foods economy on Thursday, March 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Table 212 in Montevideo (4490 US-212). Lunch will be served during the Land Stewardship Project’s (LSP) Upper Minnesota River Valley Food Forum, and a social hour will follow the event. The event is free, but RSVPs are required. Xcel Energy seeks comment on proposed transmission infrastructure project

Last week, representatives from Xcel Energy hosted an informational open house at the Kilowatt Community Center in Granite Falls in order to present information on the proposed routes for an upcoming transmission infrastructure project to serve Upper Midwest customers. In addition to the information available by way of fliers distributed talking about the construction process, working with landowners, and electric and magnetic fields, Xcel Energy provided rows of large printed maps for landowners to see where their property is in relation to any of the 15 proposed routes. The community also had the opportunity to provide feedback in written format that will be taken into consideration when Xcel settles on which of the proposed routes to use.

New Montevideo Veterans Home on track to open this fall

For more than a decade, Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) leaders closely collaborated with city, county and state elected officials and a Veterans’ stakeholders task force to plan the Montevideo Veterans Home. Communities were highly engaged in the process, with efforts ranging from testifying at the Legislature and donating land for the building to raising additional funds in support of special amenities. Public groundbreaking programs were hosted in summer 2021. Montevideo will join five other existing Homes throughout the state and two other new sites that are also opening in 2023 (Preston and Bemidji), bringing the total number of State Veterans Homes to eight.

$2.7 million grant to support student scholarships in Granite Falls

Southwest Initiative Foundation has been chosen by the Bush Foundation to host a $2.7 million dollar fund that will benefit students in the Granite Falls area through scholarships. Named the Archibald Bush Legacy Fund, this endowed resource will provide perpetual support to students graduating from Yellow Medicine East School District, with an emphasis on students from underrepresented communities and first-generation college students.
