$2.7 million grant to support student scholarships in Granite Falls

Southwest Initiative Foundation has been chosen by the Bush Foundation to host a $2.7 million dollar fund that will benefit students in the Granite Falls area through scholarships. Named the Archibald Bush Legacy Fund, this endowed resource will provide perpetual support to students graduating from Yellow Medicine East School District, with an emphasis on students from underrepresented communities and first-generation college students.

My husband and I love rocks! That may sound strange, but we see so much beauty in rocks. It could be the color, the size, the shape, even the mixture of how an individual rock is made up. It’s kind of funny that of all the different billions or trillions of rocks there are on earth, there are only three main types of rocks: sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic. Each of these types are formed by different processes that take place, like melting, cooling, eroding, compacting, or deforming. Agates are our favorite “rocks”, but agates are not classified in one of these three main types of rocks. Agates are considered mineraloids and they form naturally when an empty pocket inside a host metamorphic rock fills layer-by-layer with microcrystals.

County hires new Social Services Supervisor

Also at the meeting, Rae Ann Keeler-Aus was in attendance to give the report from Yellow Medicine County Human Services. Of note in the report was a discussion with regards to federal funds received by multiple county agencies to assist with addressing opioid addiction issues. Human Services directors from the 6W Community Corrections counties - including Swift, Big Stone, Chippewa, Yellow Medicine, Lac qui Parle have been meeting on a quarterly basis with a representative from Countryside Public Health, as well as Midge Christensen from 6W Community Corrections in order to discuss how best to use the funds. The initial amount the group will be receiving is $90,772.
