The Parenting Time program of New Horizons Crisis Center has been awarded a community impact grant from the United Way of Southwest Minnesota (UWSWMN) of $15,000. These funds will help cover the cost of providing supervised visits and safe exchanges for estranged parents and their child(ren) to ensure safety and continue the parent-child bond. This work aligns with UWSWMN’s safety and well-being priority area.
On the morning of Sunday, October 16th from 7 am – 12 pm the Clarkfield Fire Department held a pancake breakfast with a menu made up of pancakes, eggs, sausage, coffee, and orange juice. They were accepting free will donations at the Clarkfield Fire Hall during the breakfast.
Communities throughout the local area have been working for the past months to plan a variety of events for families and adults to enjoy for the Halloween Season. The newspaper has compiled a list of all events to make planning for the spooky season holiday even easier.
Honor Flight guardian visits Vietnam Veterans Memorial Kelly Josephson- Harriger decided to go the extra mile in memory of her father, who served his country as a soldier in Vietnam. She volunteered to be a guardian on the Midwest Honor Flight, which transports veterans to Washington D.C.

The Woodbury Chorus and Orchestra, under the direction of Cindy Martinson, will present a fundraising concert to benefit the Neighbors United Resource Center Food Shelf. Titled “A Celebration of Life”, this program of uplifting choral and orchestral music will include a variety of pieces, ranging from “Joyful, Joyful” from the film Sister Act Two, to the acclaimed “Indodana”, along with “Swing Low/Swing Down Chariot” by the men singers, “Arise my Soul, Arise” by the women, the first movement of Dan Forrest’s “Jubilate Deo”, Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus” and more. This concert will be held at 4 p.m. on November 6th at the Hawk Creek Lutheran Church, 84082 130th St in Sacred Heart. No tickets are required for admission. A freewill offering will be taken during the concert, with one hundred percent of the proceeds going to benefit the Neighbors United Resource Center Food Shelf. This will be the second year of Woodbury Chorus and Orchestra concerts at Hawk Creek Lutheran and the third concert to benefit the Neighbors United Food Shelf.
My wife and I made a trip up north to see Michael Bolton at the Grand Casino Mille Lacs in Onamia on Saturday. We witnessed all the fall colors along the way. Some areas were very vibrant still, but other areas have seen their peak for the season. Across much of central and west central Minnesota, the DNR shows that the colors are at 50% to 70% peak, with again, some locations already at the peak. The best spot to see the fall colors right now are a few pockets in extreme western and southern Minnesota.
Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW) is October 3-8. It’s a time to raise awareness of mental illnesses, fight discrimination, and provide support to people whose lives have been impacted. This year it takes on significant importance because so many people are experiencing poor mental health due to the impact of the pandemic. Anxiety and depression have increased dramatically. We can see the angst in our community - people with short tempers or who are easily frustrated.
