The annual RideMN1 bicycle trek across Minnesota has begun. This year the trek took bicyclists riding in order to raise awareness for cancer across the state along the Hwy. 23 corridor for a total of 366 miles from Pipestone to Superior, Wisconsin. RideMN1 is a non-profit organization that strives to raise awareness about cancer, encouraging cancer screenings, as Ride Director Wally McFarlane says “We know early detection is our best defense. Colonoscopies and mammograms are now standard procedures that are classified as preventive and are covered by almost all insurances. Get Screened.” Along the way, the group of riders that includes some battling cancer, and many who have beaten cancer, have stays scheduled at four state parks, and some private campgrounds. The organization provides all of the meals, and Central Lakes Trikes transports bikes, bikers, and luggage for a fee. The participants are from all over the state, as well as several Midwestern states.

What a weekend we had this past weekend! High temperatures on Saturday climbed into the mid to upper 60s and lower 70s across the state of Minnesota. This made it feel a bit like fall, but it was very pleasant to get out and enjoy our late summer weather. On Sunday, we saw again plenty of sunshine with highs generally in the lower 70s. However, portions of northwestern Minnesota climbed into the upper 70s and lower 80s as a warmfront pushed into the state. We did see those upper 70s and lower 80s move in across much of the rest of the region on Monday. Sunshine was found throughout the area which made for a great day if anyone decided to make it into a three-day weekend! A change will come our way by Thursday and into the start of the weekend as a cold-front will arrive. We could see some showers and thunderstorms for Thursday. Some lingering showers and isolated thunderstorms could stick around through Saturday.

Women’s Rural Advocacy Program (WRAP) September is National Alcohol & Drug Addiction Recovery Month, promoting new treatment options for those struggling with addiction and emphasizing the need for strong community support. According to the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), a study found that physical domestic violence was 11 times more likely on days of heavy drinking or drug use.

SquidFest! It’s fall here in our river town, and the festivals just keep rolling – Saturday the 17th, dear reader, is SquidFest. Named for a shy citizen often found waving his tentacles near the dam, it’s the second year of this community- organized celebration of art, food and culture in downtown, and this time we’ve got way more ribs - thanks to RibFest at the American Legion, where fearless ribbers will be slinging ribs from 4-9pm.
