The 4th of July came and went with some scattered showers and thunderstorms found across portions of the state. We never seem to get through a Memorial Day Weekend, or an Independence Day celebration, without the possibility for some showers and thunderstorms.
Learning what to do when you become eligible for Medicare can seem overwhelming. This class is for people who will be new to Medicare and would like to learn about Medicare Parts A, B, C and D. Topics will include a comprehensive introduction to Medicare, including what Medicare covers, supplemental insurance and Part D prescription coverage. During the class, you will learn the Medicare enrollment details, how to get the most from your benefits and how to research your Medicare plan options using the Medicare.gov site. United Way of Southwest Minnesota (UWS- WMN) is collecting new school supplies to help local children start the school year off right. Can you help us Stuff the Bus? School supplies most needed this year are colored pencils (12 count preferred), crayons (24 count preferred), fine or broad tip markers, and scissors. School supply donations can be placed in collection containers that can be found at the following locations through July 29th.
For a couple of years, Andrea Gullickson, formerly of Granite Falls, has had a vision of opening a cake pop business with her daughter, Meadow. “I realized that is a complicated process. Food trucks are popping up all over the place, so I knew I wanted to do something fun and unique,” says Gullickson.
Tuesday, July 12th: Ventriloquist James Wedgewood will be at the Granite Falls Public Library’s Storytime at the KCC at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 12th, the annual Garden Tour Fundraiser hosted by the Living at Home Block Nurse program will be held from 4 p.m.
Krista Miller, of Granite Falls, began her work in the gourmet coffee business at the age of 15 when she started her first job at The Granite Grinder. “I worked for Lisa off and on for the last 15 years. I always wanted to open my own coffee shop, and her closing [The Grinder] kind of put a rush on that,” says Miller. “So as soon as I heard that she was closing, I kind of jumped into it right away. I thought how can I make this work?”
Since 2009, the building known locally as the NSP Plant has been out of commission. Xcel Energy owns the building named the Minnesota Valley Generating Plant, and has made the decision to demolish the building later this year.
