Kilowatt Community Center Healthy Tip of the Week: Though some memory lapses are normal as you age (forgetting where you put the keys, a word at the tip of your tongue that you can’t retrieve), serious memory decline is not a given. You can keep your mind sharp and reduce the risk of serious memory impairments by concentrating on what you eat.

YES House hosts “Sunrise at Midnight”

On Friday evening, the YES House hosted “Sunrise at Midnight”, a traveling four-person production created by Taous Claire Khazem. The production was a 45 minute act, based on folktales from the mountain regions of Algeria. In the program, Khazem writes, “In 2008, I went to Algeria (where my father is from) and worked with a group of eight actresses in Bejaia. We went into the mountains and collected folktales from old women, then created a show based on three of those stories. During that period, I came across other folktales that had been translated into French. They were raunchy, violent and full of twists and turns.” Khazem’s production was created in 2017, and in 2020, the small troupe began a tour of Minnesota with the act. The visit to the YES House is part of the current tour that also included stops at Carleton College in Northfield, and The Little Theater in New London. Photo by Jessica Stolen-Jacobson

News from WRAP: LGBTQ+ and Pride Month

June is National Pride Month and is celebrated to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising, formerly known as the Stonewall Riots, in Manhattan, New York. Throughout the 1960s, the police raided establishments rumored to serve members of the LGBTQ+ community, and then on June 28, 1969 police raided the Stonewall Inn, a known “private bottle bar” that LGBTQ+ individuals frequented. Within minutes bar patrons and neighborhood residents began the uprising in response to the police brutality against those that were being arrested. Hundreds of people were involved in the uprising and ensued for the next five days, six days total. New York’s Pride march this year will commemorate the 53rd anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising.
