The Neighbors United Resource Center Food Shelf, located at 841 2nd St. in Granite Falls, is a participant in the annual Minnesota March FoodShare campaign. For every dollar donated, the local food shelf is able to purchase nine dollars worth of food to share with families living in poverty and dealing with hunger on a day-to-day basis.
The Neighbors United Food Shelf operates totally with volunteer staff. Neighbors United typically feeds over 400 people per month. Families may use the food shelf once a month and receive enough food to feed their family typically for 2-3 days. Food comes from a variety of sources. Besides food that is donated by individuals and churches, the food shelf is able to buy food from Second Harvest Heartland, as well as from local grocers, to fill the shelves. Donations of food and cash are accepted.
Last year the food shelf received donations of over $24,000 through the generosity of local individuals and organizations. The City of Granite Falls has provided a yearly contribution and local businesses and civic organizations have been generous in providing needed support. United Way has also been a source of ongoing grant funds for the local food shelf.Monetary donations can be sent to: Neighbors United Food Shelf, c/o YMC-FS, 930 4th St., Suite 4, Granite Falls, MN 56241.
