Carter Sneller and Trent Skjefte scored some early points to get YME on the board. Canby kept it tight with free throws and shots from the outside. The Sting tied it at 10, then Canby started using an aggressive full court press. YME started using long 1-2 passes . Both teams had a lot of steals and interceptions. The first half ended with a close Lancer lead 18-21.
During the second half, Sneller was hitting great shots from the outside again. Canby held a small lead as the scores climbed. With around five minutes left, Canby started to pull away, getting ahead by 12. Frustration started to show in the Sting players. YME scored some points but weren't quite able to close the gap. The final score was 39-45.
Coach Suter reported that their early goal was to try to shut down Riley Kockelman and Zack Durfee, two of Canby's big scorers. "Outside of the time we were in foul trouble in the first half we did a really nice job...We really struggled with the press out of the gate. I'm happy with the adjustments we made at halftime and we did a much better job handling that part in the second half. We just can't shoot 30% and still win.
We're not playing with any flow with the five guys that are out there. We have a lot of new moving pieces so that's expected. It's going to take some time. They've got to be willing that sometimes it's more important for me to find my teammates an opportunity to score rather than always looking for my own."
