Denny Bakkelund, Vice President of the Granite Falls Lions Club, presented the Scholarship Yellow Medicine East with a check for $1500. It will provide two $500 and two $250 scholarships for graduating seniors of YME.

The volunteers of Scholarship YME form a selection committee, which looks at a variety of factors for deciding who receives how much money. The process is blind, they don’t look at names. Factors include grades, extra-curriculars, work experience, an essay, and more. They were proud to report that for the past “umpteen” every student that applied walked away with some amount. In 2017 scholarships awarded totaled $60,350 to 39 qualifying graduating YME seniors. Recipients are required to complete the fall semester, and receive the check with the spring enrollment.

Scholarship YME has an origin date back to February 12, 1987 and was first named "Citizens Scholarship Foundation of Granite Falls." Later the organization changed its name on November 28, 2007 to "Yellow Medicine East Dollars for Scholars", as a chapter of Scholarship America, Inc. a nationally-based scholarship organization. As a cost savings measure, Yellow Medicine East Dollars for Scholars re-organized as Scholarship Yellow Medicine East in 2014.

Since 1987 the organization has raised more than $898,000 assisting 1,469 area students with their post secondary education.
