At the Explore Minnesota Conference this month in Mankato, the importance of choosing the one unique thing about your town and really promoting it was emphasized over and over again. We have our scenic location along the river, growing art scene, but I believe our unique marketing niche is heritage tourism. Now with the Fagen Fighter's WWII Museum and the Andrew J. Volstead House, I see an increasing amount of tours that include both historic destinations. The Volsteads have a unique story that can only be found in Granite Falls and the Fagen Museum brings visitors from all over the country.
On April 24, Granite Falls and the Volstead House will host museum directors from throughout Minnesota that are attending the Minnesota Alliance of Local History Museums annual conference in Marshall. They will tour the Volstead Home and then learn how to host a Prohibition era event or create an exhibit with that theme. Museology Museum Services will present the educational part of this event. Museology has been working with the Granite Falls Historical Society throughout the past year on a plan to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of Prohibition in 2019 and beyond. Grants have been submitted to fund this research and hold events next year. Community input and ideas on how to celebrate this anniversary are encouraged! The first opportunity to participate in the 100th anniversary of Prohibition happens soon on April 7, 2018 with a "National Beer Day" tasting event held at the Andrew Volstead Home from 3-6 p.m.. You will be able to taste a variety of local craft beer and "Prohibition" style beers, learn about their characteristics and enjoy appetizers while you soak in the historic atmosphere and learn about the history of the Andrew J. Volstead Home in Granite Falls. Celebrate the end of Prohibition in the home of the man who wrote the Volstead Act, enforcing Prohibition!
Later in 1933 on Repeal Day, December 5, all types of alcohol were again legal. Tickets are $30 - tickets are available at the Chamber office or online.
Mark your calendars for the next Chamber Business Breakfast on April 10 from 7:40-9 a.m. again at Prairie’s Edge Casino Resort Conference Center. We've upgraded the breakfast menu to include hot items, price is still $5 for members, $10 for guests. The speaker for April is Tom Kooimann , CEO of Granite Falls Health. He will share the plans for the new hospital and other exciting news from Granite Falls Health.
