The Granite Falls based law firm of Holmstrom & Kvam, PLLP recently announced that Jeremy Blackwelder, who has worked at the firm since 2014, will become a full partner at the firm. He joins current partners Greg Holmstrom and Spencer Kvam.
Blackwelder is a native of Canby and received a degree in law enforcement from Alexandria Technical and Community College. While working on a bachelor’s degree at Southwest Minnesota State University, Blackwelder worked as a police officer at the Upper Sioux Community Police Department. After completing his studies in Marshall, he earned a law degree from Hamline University School of Law in St. Paul.
Blackwelder married his wife Kristina in 2010. They currently live in Granite Falls with their two children, ages three and ten months. Kristina teaches kindergarten at Bert Raney Elementary in Granite Falls. Blackwelder is active in the community and serves as the president of both the Kiwanis Club and Scholarship YME.
Practicing law has been something that Blackwelder always wanted to do since he was a little kid. His father served as the Chief Deputy Sheriff for Yellow Medicine County for 34 years. “I grew up around law enforcement,” Blackwelder reflected, adding that this helped spur his interest in becoming a lawyer.
During law school, Blackwelder began working as an intern at Holmstrom & Kvam before eventually passing the Minnesota State Bar Exam in 2014. He first met Holmstrom and Kvam through Kiwanis, and learned that the pair may be looking for new staff members. “It worked out really well,” Blackwelder said. Holmstrom and Kvam became “great mentors” for Blackwelder as he pursued his legal career.
Blackwelder covers a wide array of different legal topics, saying, “I do everything and anything.” Although his work covers many areas, he explained that “being a former cop, I have an inside knowledge of how criminal law works.” Blackwelder enjoys the variety of his work, adding that it is a benefit of practicing law in a small town.
Although there are now three partners working for the firm, there are no plans to change the name of the Holmstrom & Kvam law firm. Blackwelder will also continue with his current caseload.
In his free time, Blackwelder enjoys playing and watching sports. He is a big fan of the Minnesota Vikings, and plays basketball and slow-pitch softball. He also enjoys spending time outdoors with his family and attending YME games in town.
