Granite Falls Health recently welcomed Tina King, CNM, as a new midwife on their staff. Midwifery is the professional specializing in pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, women's sexual and reproductive health, and newborn care. The practice has been around since ancient times, but has grown in popularity in more recent years as expecting mothers turn to more ‘humanized’ and ‘natural’ approaches to childbirth.

King received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Bethel College of Nursing before obtaining her Master’s degree in Midwifery from Frontier Nursing University. She also holds a Master’s degree in Nursing Education from Walden University.

For King, the importance of women’s control over their own healthcare choices is central to the work that she does. She describes herself as playing a supportive role to help meet the needs of women from puberty through end of life. “Women are empowered when they are given the opportunity to make their own choices in life, especially with their healthcare needs,” King said.

As a midwife, King offers a wide range of specialized services for her patients including family planning and education, preconception care (including pelvic exams, pap smears, and breast exams), in addition to prenatal and postpartum care. She explains that her work is evidence-based, meaning that they follow standard medical practices and are proven to help patients. Her work is done in conjunction with other OBGYN practices, meaning that patients will work with King and their doctors to find the right balance of treatment that fits their unique situation.

A key component of midwifery according to King is the importance of establishing a relationship with her patients. She describes the process of “getting to know them at every level,” something King believes creates a bond of trust. This trust is crucial when patients make important decisions pertaining to their pregnancy or general health.

King says that she is thrilled to be in Granite Falls. “I love it, I love it a lot,” she said with excitement. She says that she really enjoys the “rural setting” and appreciates the opportunity that it affords to have a personalized connection with her patients.
