Wayne F. Walther, 83, formerly of Clarkfield, passed away peacefully in Hamilton, Montana on Sunday, March 18, 2018 surrounded by dear family members. He lived a life of strong faith in God and was a life-long Lutheran.
Wayne was born on May 24, 1934 in Brownstown, Indiana to Fred and Amanda (Woempner) Walther. While growing up, his family moved frequently to serve various Lutheran schools where both of his parents were teachers; they lived in Indiana, Nebraska, and Illinois during Wayne’s childhood. He graduated from high school in Carlyle, Illinois and joined the Army after graduation.
After his military service, Wayne studied Agriculture Management at Michigan State University. He began work at B&W Co-Op in Breckenridge, Michigan after graduating. Wayne married Marlyn (Harmon) Walther in Bay City, Michigan on October 22, 1960. Their marriage was blessed with three children – Barbara, Maria and James.
They moved to Minnesota in 1972 where Wayne started Clarkfield Bean Company. In 1987 he changed careers and became an insurance agent for Thrivent Financial where he worked until he retired. He was active in the communities where he lived and served on the school board in Clarkfield for several years.
In 2001, Wayne and Marlyn moved to Hamilton, Montana to retire. Wayne volunteered at Marcus Daly Hospital and the Daly Mansion; he also worked at Discovery Care, Safeway and the Lakeland Feed Store. Wayne and Marlyn loved to walk and could often be seen walking hand-in-hand down the streets of Hamilton. They frequented all the coffee shops and Wayne was known for his great stories and a wonderful laugh.
Wayne is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marlyn; his daughters Barbara (Brad) Anderson of White Plains, NY and Maria (Brett) Erlandson of Foley, MN; and four grandchildren of whom he was so very proud – Alec Wayne Anderson, Taylor Brett Erlandson, Collin Graham Anderson, and Riley Ruth Erlandson. He is also survived by two brothers – John (Caroline) Walther of Wauwatosa, WI and Daniel (Kathy) Walther of Webster Groves, MO; two sisters-in-law Ruth Walther of Belleville, IL and Doris Walther Conrad of Fort Wayne, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Richard Walther and Paul Walther, his sister Hildegard Brammaier and brother-in-law Marvin Brammaier. Services were held at Valley View Estates nursing home in Hamilton on March 20.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 26 at 2:00 p.m. at Aastad Lutheran Church, 19383 County Highway 110, Fergus Falls, MN. The family requests memorial gifts to the Marcus Daly Hospice Center in Hamilton. Arrangements with Brothers Mortuary of Hamilton, MT.
