Howard Lerohl, 87, of Excelsior, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2018. Howard was born and raised in rural Sacred Heart and attended Wang Lutheran Church in rural Maynard, along with his family and extended family. He was very proud of his Norwegian-Lutheran heritage.
Upon graduation from Granite Falls High School, he attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, where he gradated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music and later received his Master’s Degree from University of Minnesota. He wa a music educator and choral director at Orono High School in Long Lake for 30 years; served as Director of Worship and Music at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Excelsior for 25 years and served in the U. S. Navy where he achieved the rank of Captain in the Naval Reserves.
Howard was very involved in the Valdres Samband and Sons of Norway organizations and also served on the Bord of Directors of the F. Melius Christensen Foundation. He wad a truly remarkable man; a devoted husband; a loving father; grandfather, and great grandfather; and a faithful servant of God.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Emma; his older brother, Alden; sister-in-law, Ruth; and his beloved wife, Diane. Howard is survived by his younger brother, Robert; sister-in-law, Helen; his four children, Kristin, Kathryn, Kimberly, and Mark; their spouses, Laura Wilson, James Croyle and Anna O’Connell; eight grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren and many cousins, nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at a later date and time to be announced
