Liz (Thor) Anderson

August 1st, 1928 – October 30th, 2021

Liz Anderson (Thor) passed away on October 30, 2021, at her daughter's home in Portland, Oregon. Liz was born in Wilton, North Dakota to Mabel and Henry Thor. Her given name was Ruth Elizabeth Selma Thor, Ruth for her mother's midwife, Selma for her dear Aunt. Her parents were farmers and she remembered helping them clean the dust from the windowsill as the first task in the morning. She attended a one room country school for four years and then moved to Lake City, Minnesota after her family lost the farm due to the Depression. Liz finished High School there where she was named Salutatorian of her graduating class and received the first Patton award for high academic achievement.

She was also editor of the school's monthly newspaper. The move from North Dakota to Minnesota resulted in much improved weather (from dust storms to living near a lake) and from a one room country school to a multi-room public school.

Liz attended Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota for one semester in a nursing program. This is where she met her future husband. She continued with her nursing studies at Bethesda Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota and graduated as a Registered Nurse. She married Dale Anderson at a beautiful Christmas wedding, and they settled in San Luis Obispo, California where her husband attended Cal Poly while she worked as a Nurse. When he graduated, she received a PHT (Pushed Hubby Through).

After moving with her husband to Southern California, Liz lovingly raised their two children and worked as a nurse for many years. She later pursued more education at El Camino College and earned an AA degree and continued to UCLA where she earned a Secondary Teacher's Credential. Liz taught Certified Nursing Assistant students for eighteen years at a Regional Occupational Center while also continuing to refine and perfect her artistic skills.

In 1990, she and her husband moved to Bend to be closer to family. They were Volunteers for Wycliffe Bible Associates for seven years in Dallas, Texas, Huntington Beach, California, and Eugene, Oregon. They traveled extensively with trips to Europe, Israel, Caribbean, Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico and throughout the United States. Many of those trips were to National Square Dance Conventions.

Liz's Christian faith was the center of her life every day. Wherever she lived, she taught many Sunday School and Bible Study Classes. She was a member of the Bend Church of the Nazarene and was active in Small Prayer and Community Groups.

She was preceded in death by her parents Henry and Mabel Thor and sister Evelyn (Ben).

Liz is survived by her husband, Dale; son Steve (Randi), grandchildren Ruth (Caleb), Anna (John), Martin, Margaret (Miki), Rebecca, Kandis (Ray) and Samuel; daughter Sue (Scott), grandchildren Hannah, Beth (Dustin) and Cora and thirteen great grandchildren, two nephews, Lowell (Debbie) and Jim Nelson and one niece, Carol (Dan) Oberbroeckling, two brothers-in-law, Ronald, and Charles Anderson and two sisters-in-law, Beverly Heemstra and Carroll Albertson.

There will be a Celebration of Life Service on Friday, December 3rd at 1:00 PM at Bend Church of the Nazarene 1270 NE 27th St, Bend OR. In lieu of Flowers, contributions may be made to Partners in Care Hospice, 2075 NE Wyatt Ct. Bend OR 97701 or to Legacy Hospice Services, PO Box 4484, Portland, OR 97208.
