Roger L. Nelson Sr. (The Whistler), 72, Sumter SC formerly of Big Elbow Lake, Becker Co, MN and Sacred Heart MN passed away 4 Dec 2021, at MUSC, Florence, SC.

Roger was born 26 Sep 1949 in Granite Falls, MN to Donald & Evelyn (Schneider) Nelson. Roger was baptized 5 Sep 2021 at Alice Drive Baptist Church, Sumter, SC

Roger graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1967. He served in the US Army from 1968-1971. Roger was stationed in OK, Germany and Thailand during the Vietnam War. Upon his honorable discharge, he worked at Plew’s, Bob’s Red Owl and School Bus Garage in Granite Falls, MN. In Sacred Heart, MN he owned and ran the Standard Gas Station. Roger bought a different building and turned that into Nelson’s Auto Repair Shop. He phased out of that and worked at Warner Manufacturing for 15 years.

In 1999, Roger & his wife Alisa bought the Elbow Lake Store. They retired last summer and moved to Sumter, SC.

Roger had a unique sense of humor and was very quick with come back. He was a member of the National Sarcasm Society. Hunting & fishing were his passion. Roger restored muscle cars, flamed them by hand, never decals. He could fix anything. He played the guitar, could out whistle anyone, & enjoyed listening to classic county & oldies rock & roll. Roger loved Alisa, his kids, grandkids, great-grandkids and his dogs.

He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Alisa of Sumter, SC. His children, Lisa M. Nelson, Granite Falls, MN, Roger L. Nelson Jr, (Marsha), Sumter, SC and Donald J. Nelson(Robyn), East Bethal, MN. Grandchildren, Zach (Chandel) McCay, Matt (Elizabeth) Nelson, Dylan Hellwig, Kylie Nelson, Karlie Hellwig, & Ashlynn Nelson. Great Grandchildren, Kyra Kuntz & Sawyer McCay. Sister Carol (Roger) Beck and many nieces & nephews; and special fishing buddy Bill Miles.

A celebration of life ceremony will be held 1 pm Saturday , 15 Jan 2022 at the Sacred Heart Community Center, 309 1st Ave, Sacred Heart, MN. In remembrance of Big Rog, we will be wearing flannel shirts & jeans. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Rogers name to Fisherhouse.org, your favorite humane society or a local hunter’s safety program for kids.
