The Sting played Wabasso Friday night, in their first home game of the season. Toward the end of the first quarter, the Sting had a solid string of plays that got them close to the end zone. Elliot Korstad recovered a fumble after another Sting player caught a punt. He and Ethan Peterson rushed for quite a few yards. They ended the quarter on the 21 yard line. Peterson ran wide for the touchdown, but Wabasso blocked the extra point. David Hidalgo stuffed a long pass to a Wabasso receiver, and Hunter Johnson sacked the QB. During their next possession, YME had a series of short carries mitigated by a holding penalty. They punted.

The Rabbits completed a huge pass, over 20 yards, to tie the game 6-6. Peterson intercepted the extra point pass. Wabasso attempted an onside kick, but YME snagged the ball. Carter Sneller caught a long 37 yard pass, and was tackled on the 18 yard line. Peterson rushed through the line to get within inches of the end zone. After a few rush attempts, Angel Jimenez broke through for the touchdown, and also scored the two point conversion, putting the Sting up 14-6.

Wabasso completed another long pass, which Peterson stopped at the five yard line. There were 19 seconds left before halftime. Johnson pressured the quarterback, who slipped and fell for the 3rd down, and was penalized for intentional grounding. The Rabbits completed a 12 yard pass for the touchdown, but the Sting stopped the extra point. They finished the half up 14-12.

In the third quarter Ayden Friese scored a touchdown on a ridiculous and hazardous 60 yard run. Hidalgo scored the field goal extra point, putting YME up 21-12. In the fourth quarter, the Sting got inches from the end zone before scoring again. They tried a series of rushing plays and Jimenez eventually broke through once again. Hidalgo scored the extra point, putting YME up to the final score of the game, 28-12.

Coach Schueler reported, “Coming into the game we knew that Wabasso had some bigger Linemen so our strategy on defense was to try to eat up their linemen with our d-linemen so that our linebackers could be free to scrape and pursue the ball carriers. This worked well for us. Offensively, we wanted to play to our strength which was speed and running off the edge. We were able to do this well and our o-line stepped up in a big way to help us accomplish this. It really was a complete team win.
