The Sting faced Lakeview last Friday. In the first quarter Carter Sneller caught a nine-yard pass from Angel Jimenez for a touchdown. David Hidalgo scored the extra point. Later Ethan Peterson broke through the Lakers line and ran 22 yards for a touchdown, putting YME up 13-0.
In the second quarter, Elijah Sterner caught a long 26-yard pass from Aaron Loe to score a touchdown for Lakeview, putting the score 13-6. In the third quarter, Sterner made a short run through the Sting defense for a touchdown. YME answered back with an incredible 53-yard pass caught by Bennet Knapper for a touchdown. Carter Louwagie caught a 10-yard pass to score a touchdown for the Lakers. Ayden Friese also got a touchdown for the Sting, barreling through the lines for a five-yard run. Friese also got the two point conversion after Peterson's touchdown in the fourth quarter, putting the final score at 34-20.
Coach Schueler reported, “ Going in to the game, for offense, we wanted to work the edges because we noticed on film that this could be a vulnerable spot on their defense. It ended up that we were able to accomplish this goal which led to, what ended up being, a career night for Ethan Peterson and our rushing offense as a whole.” It really was a great night offensively. Defensively, we had some unfortunate penalties plague us and did not always execute our game plan the way we were hoping to. We made enough plays to get the win, but there are some elements that we need to fix. As we continue to strive to be the best YME Football team that we can be, we will work on fixing those mistakes and be better for this next week.
It is really nice to get another win. The boys are really excited about it and we look forward to carrying this momentum into the LQPV game this upcoming Friday. Like I said before, there are still things we need to work on, but learning those lessons and fixing those mistakes after a win makes it much more enjoyable compared to fixing them after a loss.
(Regarding the 53 yard pass to Bennet Knapper in the 3rd quarter) It was a great play. Angel threw a perfect ball and Bennett made a great over the shoulder catch and then extended the play to the endzone. It brought a lot of excitement to the team and was a great way to answer Lakeview's scoring drive just moments before. Also, Bennett has worked hard this off season and it was a great moment for him to reap some of the benefits of that hard work. I was, and continue to be, proud of him along with all the boys and the hard work they put in.
