Tips sought on cause of July fire

The Ames Fire Department is seeking tips to help determine the cause of a July 15 fire that destroyed an apartment complex.

The South Meadow Apartments, 301 S. Fifth St., was thought to be a total loss after an early morning fire that began in a carport in the southeast side of the building quickly spread along the roof.

The fire damage ultimately displaced all the residents of the building’s 56 units.

A witness on the scene who called the fire department told the Ames Tribune it appeared the fire started in a boat stored in the carport.

Acting Fire Chief Paul Sandoval said the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and investigators are asking for the public’s help in determining what might have caused it.

“Sometimes, people may think that what they saw is not pertinent, but it could turn out to be the missing piece to the puzzle,” he said.

Sandoval said investigators have no evidence the fire was the result of arson, but he said it remains part of the ongoing investigation.

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call the Ames Police Department at (515) 239-5133, the anonymous tip line at (515) 239-5533, or the Ames Fire Department at (515) 239-5108.
