Members of the Massachusetts Congressional Delegation dedicating an American Elm tree, the official state tree of Massachusetts, on behalf of the residents of the commonwealth. The tree was planted on the grounds of the Capitol in Washington, D.C., in celebration of the largest expansion of the Capitol in history with the soon-to-be-open Capitol Visitors Center. A time capsule prepared by Senator Kennedy was buried beneath the tree. The capsule included the poem: Liberty Tree" by Thomas Paine as well as a history of the "Original Liberty Tree," an elm that was used as a gathering place for the patriots leading up to the Revolutionary War. - Somerville
