Yesterday, Governor Mark Dayton announced that he has asked a group of Minnesota Mayors to advise the administration in their efforts on tax reform. The Tax Reform Advisory Group for Local Government Aid (LGA) will review and discuss policy issues related to Local Government Aid, specifically on how to best pay for local services while holding local property taxes down. The work of this advisory group will directly support Governor Dayton’s comprehensive tax reform proposal, which will be presented to the 2013 legislature.

Mary Sawatzky of Willmar and a native to Granite Falls has announced her candidacy for the Minnesota House in District 13B.
Sawatzky, 50, a teacher in the Willmar School District, will run as a Democrat. The seat is currently held by Rep. Bruce Vogel, R-Willmar.
Sawatzky announced her candidacy in advance of the Feb. 7 Minnesota precinct caucuses.
Dr. David Pichaske, author, publisher and a longtime English professor at Southwest Minnesota State University, has been nominated for the annual Kay B. Sexton Award, which honors a lifetime contribution to Minnesota’s literary community.
The winner of the award will be announced in late February. It is sponsored by Common Good Books of St. Paul and affiliated with the annual Minnesota Book Awards contest.

The 20th annual meeting of Clean Up the River Environment (CURE) will be held on Saturday, February 11th from 3 - 10 p.m. with the Hollywood Theater serving as the hub of a multi-venue event on Main Street Montevideo. The event is being billed as a progressive party as there will be activities held at the Hollywood, the Public Library, Java River Café and at CURE's new upstairs office space.
